Speech and Debate Banner for Hoehne School

The Hoehne High School Speech and Debate Team provides students with the opportunity to compete in public speaking competitions under the oversight of both the Colorado High School Activities Association and the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA). Hoehne High School has consistently maintained a speech and debate team since the 1980s and became a Charter Chapter of the National Speech and Debate Association in 2014.

Under CHSAA, students compete at tournaments held throughout southern Colorado. The novice season begins in October, and the varsity season begins in November. The season culminates with the CHSAA State Speech and Debate tournament, held at the end of January for the 3A division, at the end of February for the 4A division, and at the beginning of March for the 5A division. The Hoehne High School team currently competes in the 4A division.

Under NSDA, students compete at two local tournaments: NSDA Rules held every December and the National Qualifying Tournament held in February. Students qualifying for the national tournament represent the Colorado Grande NSDA District in Iowa each June. As a member of the Colorado Grande NSDA District, the Hoehne speech and debate team competes against teams from throughout southern Colorado.

Regardless of whether they are competing at a CHSAA tournament or an NSDA tournament, students earn points towards NSDA Degrees with each performance. As additional points are accumulated, students are awarded new degrees. These degrees not only reflect the hard work and diligence of the individual but also contribute to a team's ranking in comparison to other NSDA member schools. An individual's or a school's ranking can be found on the rankings page of the NSDA website.

How are points earned?

At each tournament, students compete in a minimum of three rounds. In debate events, students earn six points for a win and three points for a loss or non-decision. In the main NSDA events, a ranking of 1 earns six points, a ranking of 2 earns five points, a ranking of 3 earns four points, a ranking of 4 earns three points, and a ranking of 5 or lower earns two points. In non-main events, a ranking of 1 earns five points.
